THE TRADITION & MEANING OF WEDDING BOMBONIERE FAVOURS

Confetti are sugar-coated almonds, also known as Jordan almonds. These candies represent the bittersweet life of a married couple. The sugar coating is added to the bitter almonds in the hope that the newlyweds will have more sweet times than bitter during their lifetime together. When confetticome in boxes or bags they are called bomboniere and serve as place settings or favours.

The candy is given out in odd numbers, most often 3s and 5s. Three almonds symbolize the bride, the groom and their future child, and five almonds represent five wishes for the sposi: health, wealth, fertility, happiness and longevity. Confetti are not only used in Italian weddings, but also in Greek and Middle Eastern wedding ceremonies.

This tradition most likely dates back to the ancient Romans. In fact, the term comes from the Latin confectum meaning “prepared or wrapped”. In the Middle Ages the term referred to jams or dried fruit covered in honey, however the confetti that we know today were first produced around 1400 in the city of Sulmona, located in central Italy.

Once-upon-a-time only white organza bags held the white confetti and were tied with a white ribbon. Today, bomboniere come in all different colors and flavors, and containers are all shapes and sizes.

FOR HIS PROPOSAL, Rosario faked meeting clients for a wedding consultation and set up his chosen location with roses, candles and fireworks that read ‘Marry Me?’. “She had no idea the setup was for her until I knelt down and proposed,” said Rosario. “

The couple confirmed their love in a traditional ceremony at their parish St Marks Catholic Church, Drummoyne. Graziella looked exquisite in her fit and flare, lace Berta Bridal gown from Brides By Francesca. She carried a trailing bouquet of beautiful ivory Phalaenopsis orchids and finished off the look with a cathedral length veil. The inspiration for the décor elements and reception styling came from Graziella’s passion for Gucci. “I created a logo that I carried throughout the whole wedding that would represent our initials in a very stylish yet simple way,” explained Rosario. The couple chose the Main Ballroom at Doltone House Hyde Park as their venue. “As I suggest with all my clients,” said Rosario, “the theme must be carried out from the beginning until the end. I had set the tone with our invitations, gold quilted boxes with embossed foiled logo motifs, inside acrylic panel invitations etched with gold and black text.”

The exquisite event was styled by Rossi Weddings & Events, bringing in luxe gold Channel chairs, crystal ceiling chandeliers, elaborate chandelier table centres custom made by Rossi By Design, an abundance of red roses, gold trimmed charger plates and gold quilted menus. The main and cake tables were brought in also to match. Each place was set with gold acrylic, laser cut names.

Rosario knew he needed to make a statement with his bomboniere. Their guests went home with a beautifully gold monogrammed bottle of 700ml 24 carat gold flaked custom Buttercup liqueur and matching custom designed bomboniere boxes.
